Spiritual Spring Cleaning

Spring has sprung! Many of us get excited about the warmer weather, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping and we even develop the urge to clean and put things in order. Spring has sprung! Many of us get excited about the warmer weather, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping and we even develop the urge to clean and put things in order. We clean out closets, take things apart, throw things out, give things away, we dust, we sweep, we mop. Spring cleaning takes a lot of effort and hard work but we are willing to reach into every dark and neglected corner of our homes in order to make it presentable, fresh, and new.

But what about our “spiritual” houses, they too need a freshening up. We may have things tucked back in the recesses of our spiritual closets that block our intimacy with God and need to be cleaned out.

When we clean our spiritual house we don’t need scrub brushes, mops, and brooms, we don’t need window cleaners, waxes, floor cleaners, bleaches, and disinfectants. When it comes to cleaning our spiritual house, the Word of God is our all-purpose cleanser and contains everything we need to get all the dirt out.

However, if we gathered all of our cleaning tools and supplies to clean our homes and did nothing it would not help us have a clean home. The same is true with our spiritual homes. God gives us His Word but we have to use it, obey it in order for it to work in our lives. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Let us draw near to God and allow Him to clean us up, to reach into the dark and neglected corners of our spiritual homes where the hurt, shame, disappointments, anger, fear, and unforgiveness dwell.

When our house has been cleaned with the all-purpose cleanser, the Word of God the Son will shine from every corner….and we will effectively share the hope that is in us and reflect His glory.

Sharing the Hope of Glory,

Pastor Ron Burgess
