There was a time when the church fervently sought out the power of God. Decisions would never be made without spending time in His presence. Men and women were found at the altar weeping, longing, and hungering for God’s power. They were not intimidated by the majority or the sleight of men.
In fact, the various circumstances of life fueled them to stay in the face of God. Their motive for the power of God was to experience change. Change in their individual lives, circumstances, and the environment that impacted them. The church knew that the power of God would enlighten, give divine enablement, wisdom, and discernment. In Ephesians 3:20 Paul encourages the church of Ephesus concerning His Power: “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think according to the power at work within us”.
I think it is awesome to serve a God that can do not just what we ask or imagine, but far above any formulated words from our mouths, and far above any imaginable thoughts from our minds. I used to think that this was unfathomable, but I have grown to understand that God does it to transform us from sinners into the likeness of his glorious character.
Even though we do not deserve it, his supernatural power is given to those who simply trust in His divine Person and the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is done according to that power that is at work in us. This inner power is not something we can take ownership of because it is through the supernatural workings of the Holy Spirit.
He’s continuously working in our inner man transforming us from glory to glory working in and through us to do His good pleasure. Yes, we need His Power!
